I’m not sure why they call it the snow plow. Maybe because of the whipped cream?  But don’t most hot chocolate recipes have whipped cream?

Indeed they do.

Maybe they named it the snow plow because after a long day of plowing snow, you will need to have this cocktail just to relax.

Helpful tips

  • You are going to be building this cocktail directly in the mug.
  • Even though you see two cocktails in this post, I will keep the recipe to the ingredients you will need for one cocktail.

How to make a snow plow cocktail

Pre-step

Get a saucepan, glass mugs and measuring glass.

You are going to build this cocktail directly in the mugs, so after you measure out the ingredients, add to the glassware.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – hot chocolate mix, Irish cream, creme de cacao and coconut rum. (A)

Step two

Measure 1 ounces of Irish cream. (B)

Left - cocoa, Irish cream, creme de cacao and coconut rum on a wooden table. Right - Irish cream poured out with the bottle in the background

Step three

Measure .5 ounce of creme de cacao. (C)

Step four

Measure 1 ounce of coconut rum. (D)

Left - creme de cacao measured out with bottle. Right - coconut rum measured with the bottle

You can see the ingredients in the mugs. (E)

Step five

Time to make the hot chocolate.

Follow the directions on the bottle or container. Make sure you make enough to fill your mug. Also, I made my hot chocolate with milk, not water.

Before it comes to a boil, take it off the heat and pour the hot chocolate into the mug to join the alcohol. (F)

Left - ingredients in the mugs. Right - cocoa added to the glass mugs

Step six

Time to add the whipped cream. Be as generous as you want.

Step seven

This is optional – take a couple of pinches of cocoa powder and sprinkle it on the whipped cream.

I wanted more powder. Notice how much the whipped cream melted.

Lots of cocoa powder sprinkled on the whipped cream with the drink in the mug

    1. Me too Brandi! My hubby thought I put too much whipped cream. I laughed and laughed. There is never too much whipped cream!

  1. You are so funny! I didn’t even notice the chocolate sprinkle on the table before you mentioned it! I get what you mean, though. Especially the photos with the oozing all over the table. I always think to myself what a mess!!! Love the snowplow cocktail, I saw it on Instagram and wanted to check it out. With that amount of alcohol maybe you are one who gets “plowed” 🙂

  2. My favourite part of this recipe, besides the whole thing, is this bit “10 ounces hot chocolate, or different amount if your glass is smaller”… which basically says if your glass is smaller do not reduce the alcohol but just the non-alcoholic portion. I love that you have your priorities right!!
