Cucumber Dill Martini

If you’re looking for a refreshing new cocktail for your repertoire, this cucumber dill martini recipe is the one to make. It’s delicious because the two flavors meld so well together.

What I most love about including cucumber in food or cocktail recipes is knowing how cool and refreshing it will make them. One of my favorite summer salads is the cucumber salad. And if I’m in the mood for a super refreshing drink, I switch between this cocktail and the cucumber mint martini.

When you pair dill and cucumber together, you get a wonderful taste treat. I’m sure we’ve all tasted these two flavors combined in appetizers, such as dips, but to have them as ingredients in a cocktail? It’s perfection in a glass.

Helpful tips

  • Use the best vodka you can afford. There is a difference in taste and texture that makes for a better cocktail.
  • Unless you have dill in your garden, you can find it in the produce section at the grocery store. It is usually in a small flat plastic container.
  • If you don’t have a muddler, use the back of a wooden spoon.
  • Since you will be muddling the ingredients in the cocktail shaker, you won’t be filling it with ice until before you add the vodka.
  • I use two strainers to avoid including broken dill and crushed cucumber in the cocktail. One is a wire strainer and the other a fine mesh strainer. If you don’t have either of these, use the cap of the cocktail shaker. Just know that it will clog and it may take you a few tries to fully strain the liquid.

How to make the cucumber dill martini

Pre-step

Get your cocktail shaker, muddler (or a large wooden spoon) and 2 martini glasses. Slice the cucumber in 12 thin wheels and set aside 4 of them for garnish. Take a potato peeler, peel 4 lengthwise strips from the remaining cucumber and set them also aside for garnish.

Step one

Gather the ingredients: fresh dill, cucumber, vodka, lime and simple syrup. (A)

Step two

Place 8 cucumber wheels and 6 sprigs of dill in the cocktail shaker. (B)

Left - dill, vodka, sliced cucumber and muddler. Right - cucumber and dill added to the cocktail shaker with lime and simple syrup on the side

Step three

Measure out 2 ounces of freshly squeezed lime juice and 1 ounce of simple syrup. Pour them into the shaker. (C)

Step four

Take the muddler and muddle the contents of the shaker for 1 – 2 minutes. You want to smell the dill and break up the cucumber. (D)

Left - lime juice and simple syrup added to the shaker for cucumber and dill. Right - the shaker with the muddled cucumber and dill

Step five

Fill the cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Measure 6 ounces of vodka (E) and add it to the shaker. (F)

Left - vodka measured with the bottle and shaker. Right - vodka added to the shaker with the rest of the ingredients

Step six

Place the cucumber strips in the two glasses. I like to criss cross them into “X’s”.

Step seven

Cap the shaker and shake vigorously for 15 seconds. Place a wire strainer on the cocktail shaker and pour the liquid through a fine mesh strainer, dividing it evenly between the two glasses.

Step eight

Add 2 cucumber slices and 2 sprigs of dill to each glass. Drape one over the side so it looks like a feather and place the other on the floating cucumber.

All that is left to take a sip! Sigh. Refreshing!

And as always, may all your dishes/drinks be delish!
