Ruby Red Grapefruit Cosmo
No one has ever turned down my ruby red grapefruit cosmo cocktail. No one! Why? Because the full body of the grapefruit juice combines so nicely with the premium alcohol.
I’ve made these cosmos two different ways. I’ve made them with freshly squeezed grapefruit juice and I’ve made them with store bought juice. Which do I prefer? You may be surprised but I’m going to say store bought.
I know, I know. I’m usually into freshly squeezed, but when I usually serve this ruby red grapefruit cosmo, it is at a dinner party and I want to enjoy my party and I don’t want to be manually squeezing grapefruits all evening. Not only is it time consuming, but it’s costly.
Helpful tips
- If you are going to squeeze your own, make sure you use ruby red grapefruit
- Slice the garnish different ways, experiment with a grapefruit wheel, a wedge or a chunk. You can also use two wheels as that makes for a pretty drink
- If you can’t afford premium ingredients, it’s okay to use mid-level as with the robust flavor of the grapefruit, you won’t notice the difference as much
- Shake vigorously so the ice breaks off in slivers. There is nothing like little ice chips floating in your drink

How to make a ruby red grapefruit cosmo
It’s super easy, there are only three ingredients!
Fill cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Get a measuring glass and two martini glasses.
After measuring, pour each ingredient in the shaker.
Step one
Gather the ingredients – vodka, orange liqueur, ruby red grapefruit juice.
Step two
Measure 4 ounces vodka.
Step three
Measure 1 ounce orange liqueur.
Step four
Measure 6 ounces ruby red grapefruit juice.
Step five
Cut a thin grapefruit wheel and cut off the rind and cut the rind in half. Cut a chunk of grapefruit, remove the rind and throw it away.
Step six
Cap the shaker and shake it for 30 seconds.
Step seven
Strain the grapefruit cosmo between the two glasses. Twist both halves of the rind and place one in each glass. Add the grapefruit wheel to the bigger glass and the chunk of grapefruit to the other.

Mmm, just pinned this and can’t wait to make one next weekend. I love grapefruit and I love cocktails, so this is right up my alley.
Yay. I love it and so don’t my guests :). Remember, if the drink isn’t sweet enough for your taste, you can add some simple syrup. Let me know how they came out!

This looks incredible! I love grapefruit. I can’t wait to try it. If only I had a freezer big enough for me to store cocktail glasses in!
Thanks so much Kate! I wish my freezer was bigger so I could fit all my martini glasses in there 😉

I am not a grapefruit fan, per se. BUT I can get excited a good grapefruit cocktail! And I am a martini lover in general. Going to try this!
I love grapefruit and martinis! Thanks for your comment Lisa!
I love how you can make a drink like this at home and not spend a ton of money at some overpriced bar. This would be great to make for a girls night in.
I so prefer making cocktails at home, but sometimes it’s fun to get it in a restaurant! 🙂 Thank you Vicky!
I don’t drink very often, but this looks absolutely amazing. Grapefruit if done right can be a great flavor.
Thanks so much Sandi! 🙂
Yum This looks so refreshing! It is 90° here again today, so perfect for this weather!

This looks fantastic! Where are these glasses from i NEED them too! Thank you ????
Kara, I got both of the glasses from Crate and Barrel. The one with the big base is more expensive than the other! I love them both and actually have another martini glass from C & B that I have that I use a lot!
Made these many times. I love grapefruit anything. Mmmm. Thanks for sharing.
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Kari! It’s one of my favorites!!
this has become one of my favorite cocktail recipes…the perfect blend….
I am so pleased to hear that! You have made my day Jeannie!
Salt or sugar rim? Or a blend?
For this one, I would do a sugar rim, but I usually don’t garnish the rim. But I know people have used colored sugar before. Thanks for your question Kelly! Cheers.
This was so refreshing! Really enjoyed!!
Thank you, Beth! I appreciate you letting me know.
