Hurricane Cocktail

This vibrant and refreshing hurricane cocktail is made with rum, grenadine, passion fruit syrup, and citrus juices. It’s the ultimate tropical cocktail recipe to impress a crowd!

If you like cocktails that are on the sweet side, you are going to love this beautiful and flavorful drink. What makes it such a pretty drink is the passion fruit syrup and grenadine. It’s reminiscent of the tequila sunrise and planter’s punch that have the same beautiful orange-red hue.

History of the hurricane drink

During World War II, whiskey was scarce so at Pat O’Brien’s bar in New Orleans, a recipe was created to use up the excess rum they had received. It is named after the classic glass it was served in, which resembled a hurricane lamp.

The original hurricane had less juice and was a bright red. You can still buy the mix either directly from the bar or online. One of my goals is to go to Pat O’Brien’s to sample the original.

Nowadays, most hurricane recipes have more juices in them and are accessible to more people because you don’t need to buy the hurricane mix to make them work.

Helpful tips

  • Although this is usually served in a hurricane glass, serve it in whatever you have on hand. Even a double old fashioned glass will do. I use two tulip shaped glasses.
  • I use white and gold rum, but you can use one kind of rum if you prefer. You can also use dark rum but NOT spiced rum.
  • You can either use passion fruit syrup like I did, or passion fruit juice. I couldn’t find juice that didn’t have additives or other juices in it, so I bought the syrup from Amazon.
  • There is no need to add any simple syrup since passion fruit syrup, orange juice, and grenadine are all sweet on their own.
  • Wash the citrus before you use it to remove any pesticide. Here’s how: squirt some unscented natural hand soap in your hand and take each lime and rub the soap on the skin. Next, scrub the skin with a vegetable brush. Run each piece of fruit under cold water to make sure all of the soap has washed off.
  • Want to lessen the cocktail’s sweetness? Add .50 ounce instead of .75 ounce of grenadine.

How to make a hurricane cocktail

Pre-step

Get a cocktail shaker, measuring glass, and two tulip glasses.

For garnish, slice a thin orange wheel and cut into quarters. Cut a thin slit in the flesh of the orange so you can place a slice on the rim of the glass. Also, get two maraschino cherries, wash the syrup off the fruit, and set them aside.

After measuring out the ingredients, pour into the cocktail shaker.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – light rum, gold rum, passion fruit syrup, orange juice, and grenadine syrup.
