Pineapple Upside Down Cake Shot

This pineapple upside down cake shot is brought to life with vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, and grenadine. It’s delightfully sweet and perfectly refreshing, making it an ideal shot to enjoy with friends and family.

This won’t come as a surprise to anyone, but I love a layered shooter. I will go out of my way to layer a shot, just to see if I can.

Now, this pineapple upside down shot is not your typical layered shot because you really can’t separate the vodka and the pineapple juice. They’re going to blend. But by adding the grenadine last, it will sink to the bottom and create a layered look, as you can see in the photos.

So, if you are new to layering an alcohol shot, this is a great one to try because it’s so easy to be successful. Your friends will be impressed.

I love so many different layered shots, it’s hard to pick a favorite but I will try. This pineapple upside down cake shot recipe ranks among my top 5 layered shots for best taste. The other other four are chocolate covered cherry, butterball, Snickers, and jelly donut shot.

I’m most partial to tasty shots that are also pretty!

Helpful tips

  • How to layer a shot: Use either a cocktail spoon or a regular iced coffee teaspoon. Always place the spoon upside down with the bowl-side facing up in and against the side of the glass. You will then slowly pour the liquid over the back of a spoon and into the glass.
  • Even though you won’t need a pourer to help layer this shot, if you plan to serve a variety of layered shots, Invest in a few pourers. This will help you with your layering. Here’s why: using a pourer helps to control the pour, which is critical to layering any shot. But if you do use a pourer, you will have to eyeball your quantities because they’re coming straight out of the bottle, unmeasured.
  • This is important. You need to add the ingredients in this order – vanilla vodka, pineapple juice, and grenadine. Even though the grenadine will sink to the bottom, if you put it in first, it will just mix with the rest of the ingredients as you add them and not create the layered effect you’re after.
  • Optional: Occasionally, I put a maraschino cherry in the bottom of the shot glass before I add the ingredients, but I didn’t in this recipe because it sometimes messes up the grenadine effect. Try it both ways to see what you think.

This recipe is for one layered shot, so if you’re pouring for more than one person, use the same amounts of the ingredients in each glass.

Pre-step

Get your shot glasses, measuring glass, and cocktail spoon.

Step four

Measure .25 ounce of grenadine and put the cocktail spoon upside down and against the inside the glass. Slowly pour the grenadine over the spoon and into the glass. You will see the grenadine sink and infiltrate the other ingredients.
