Tips
  • When preparing the sweet potatoes, aim to cut them into uniform cubes. This ensures even cooking, preventing some pieces from being undercooked while others are overcooked.
  • Lightly coat the sweet potato cubes with olive or your preferred cooking oil. Avocado oil is another good choice. This helps to crisp up the exterior and adds flavor to the sweet potatoes.
  • Don’t skimp on the seasoning! Sweet potatoes pair well with various spices such as garlic powder, chipotle powder, paprika, chili powder, and cumin. Toss the cubes in the seasonings before placing them in the air fryer basket for even distribution.
  • Preheat your air fryer before adding the sweet potato cubes. This helps to jump-start the cooking process and ensures that the sweet potatoes cook evenly and become crispy on the outside.
  • This recipe works well with the tray type of air fryer and basket air fryer. I used both in this recipe, so I didn’t have to do the potatoes in batches. I also like to make sure they cook the same in each type.
  • Arrange the sweet potato cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray, ensuring they are not overcrowded. If the basket is too full, the sweet potatoes may steam instead of getting crispy.
  • Depending on your air fryer model, shake or stir the sweet potato cubes halfway through the cooking time. This helps to ensure even cooking and crispiness on all sides.
  • Keep an eye on the sweet potato cubes towards the end of the cooking time. They should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. You can test for doneness by piercing a cube with a fork.
  • Once the sweet potato cubes are done cooking, transfer them to a serving dish and enjoy them immediately while they’re still hot and crispy.
  • If you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat the sweet potatoes, place them in a toaster oven at 350 for 5 – 10 minutes or in the air fryer at the same temperature and time.

Step five

Take the trays out of the air fryer and preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Set the timer to 12 minutes. Add the potatoes on the tray leaving space between each cube. (C)

For the basket type, leave the basket in the air fryer when preheating at 400 F. Once the oven has finished preheating, add the potato chunks to the basket in a single layer. (D)

Note: If the potatoes shift in the basket, like mine did, arrange them once you put them back in the air fryer.

Step six

Flip the potatoes at the six-minute air fry mark so the potatoes are cooked on both sides evenly.

After 12 minutes, try one of the potato cubes for doneness. It should be crispy on the outside, and soft in the inside.
