Ingredients

  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon dillweed (dried)
  • dash ground pepper
  • dash chipotle powder
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin)

Instructions

  • Wash the sweet potatoes. Take a vegetable peeler and peel the potatoes. Cut out any blemishes.
    2 large sweet potatoes
  • Cut the potatoes into one-inch cubes; they will shrink somewhat when they cook.
  • Add the potato cubes to a mixing bowl. Add garlic powder, onion powder, cumin, salt, dill, black pepper, chipotle powder, and olive oil. Take a rubber spatula and mix the ingredients together.
1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/2 teaspoon onion powder, 1/4 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt, 1/4 teaspoon dillweed, dash ground pepper, dash chipotle powder, 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Take the trays out of the air fryer if you have that type. Preheat the oven at 400 ℉ and set the timer to 12 minutes.
If you have the basket type of air fryer, preheat the oven at 400℉ and leave the basket in the air fryer. Also, set the timer to 12 minutes.
  • With the tray type, add the potatoes in a single layer, leaving some space between each cube. Add the tray to the oven once the air fryer comes to temperature.
With the basket type, once the oven is preheated, add the potatoes in a single layer with space between the chunks of potatoes. You may have to cook them in batches.
  • At the six-minute mark, flip the potatoes on the tray type, and shake the basket type.
  • Transfer the potatoes to a serving bowl.
  • Eat, smile, and enjoy.

Notes

Helpful tips

  • When preparing the sweet potatoes, aim to cut them into uniform cubes. This ensures even cooking, preventing some pieces from being undercooked while others are overcooked.
  • Lightly coat the sweet potato cubes with olive or your preferred cooking oil. Avocado oil is another good choice. This helps to crisp up the exterior and adds flavor to the sweet potatoes.
  • Don't skimp on the seasoning! Sweet potatoes pair well with various spices such as garlic powder, chipotle powder, paprika, chili powder, and cumin. Toss the cubes in the seasonings before placing them in the air fryer basket for even distribution.
  • Preheat your air fryer before adding the sweet potato cubes. This helps to jump-start the cooking process and ensures that the sweet potatoes cook evenly and become crispy on the outside.
  • This recipe works well with the tray type of air fryer and basket air fryer. I used both in this recipe, so I didn't have to do the potatoes in batches. I also like to make sure they cook the same in each type.
  • Arrange the sweet potato cubes in a single layer in the air fryer basket or tray, ensuring they are not overcrowded. If the basket is too full, the sweet potatoes may steam instead of getting crispy.
  • Depending on your air fryer model, shake or stir the sweet potato cubes halfway through the cooking time. This helps to ensure even cooking and crispiness on all sides.
  • Keep an eye on the sweet potato cubes towards the end of the cooking time. They should be tender on the inside and crispy on the outside. You can test for doneness by piercing a cube with a fork.
  • Once the sweet potato cubes are done cooking, transfer them to a serving dish and enjoy them immediately while they're still hot and crispy.
  • If you have any leftovers, you can store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat the sweet potatoes, place them in a toaster oven at 350 for 5 - 10 minutes or in the air fryer at the same temperature and time.
