Pomegranate Margarita
A pomegranate margarita is a twist on the classic cocktail. It blends the tartness of pomegranate juice with the smoothness of tequila and the sweetness of orange liqueur. This combination creates a drink with a vibrant color and a balanced mix of refreshing and slightly sweet flavors. Ideal for celebrations or as a unique addition to any cocktail menu, it’s a modern take on a traditional favorite that appeals to those looking for something different yet delicious.
Margaritas are my favorite cocktail. There is something about the combination of tequila with sweet and sour that is just so darn good!
Add to that winning combination any kind of natural flavor like pomegranate juice, for example, and your taste buds will be feeling festive!
I like both a classic margarita and a well-made fruit one. Sometimes in the same evening!
The great thing about this pomegranate margarita, other than its being so delicious, is that pomegranate juice is chockfull of antioxidants! So, did you know that you are doing your body a favor by consuming this margarita?
Well, you are!

Helpful tips
- Use the BEST ingredients you can afford because, in general, premium ingredients equal a more delicious drink.
- Although I love using silver tequila (also known as blanco tequila), you can use añejo tequila, or reposado tequila.
- However, when mixing spirits and strong flavors, including juices like pomegranate juice, you are less likely to discern a difference, so mid-level would be fine in this recipe.
- I recommend you make your own sweet and sour mix because it’s easy, delicious, and inexpensive. Also, when you make it at home, there are no preservatives.
- Also make your own simple syrup – combine 1 cup white sugar with 1 cup water and boil on the stove for 5 minutes. Let cool fully before using in a cocktail.
- If you prefer to use agave nectar instead of simple syrup, this is a perfect cocktail for it.
- I prefer my sour mix in a 2:1 ratio, so two parts sour to one part sweet. Start there and if you decide you want it sweeter, add more simple syrup one teaspoon at a time, tasting as you go.
- I don’t usually salt the rim of the glass for my fruit margaritas but feel free to do so if you like. A good choice of salt is either kosher salt or a flake salt like Maldon.
- Here is how you salt the rim: place some chunky salt on a small plate. Wet your finger with simple syrup or lime juice and rub it against the rim of the glass. Dip and roll the rim in the salt, covering as much of it as you like. With the glass upside down, shake the glass to dislodge any extra salt. Place right side up and set aside.
- If you want to make a pitcher of pomegranate margaritas, adjust the servings in the recipe card to accommodate the number of people you want to serve.
- I’m choosing to garnish this margarita with lime wheels and wedges, but you can also add some pomegranate seeds or arils to the bottom of the glass.
How to mix the pomegranate margarita
Pre-step
Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Get a measuring glass and two margarita glasses. I like to use various shaped glasses to showcase how the cocktail looks in the different glasses.
Cut either lime wheels or wedges for garnish. Or one of each as I did.
Once you measure out each ingredient, pour it into the shaker.
Step one
Gather the ingredients – tequila, Cointreau, pomegranate juice, lime, and simple syrup. (A)
Step two
Measure 4 ounces of tequila. (B)
Step three
Measure 2 ounces of Cointreau. (C)
Step four
Measure 2 ounces of fresh lime juice. (D)
Step five
Measure 6 ounces of pomegranate juice. (E)
Step six
Measure 1 ounce of simple syrup. (F)
Step seven
Place the lid on the shaker and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds.
Step eight
Fill the two glasses with fresh ice.
Divide, strain, and pour the liquid between the two glasses. Either float the lime wheel or squeeze a lime wedge in the margarita.
Let’s look the vertical view.
I have been taking photos of a few of my cocktails with both a light and dark background. I think I still like my dark background better. What say you?
And the flavor is just as vibrant as the colors.
I hope you enjoyed this pomegranate margarita recipe.

What a perfect cocktail to usher in the weekend. This flavor combination sounds amazing: my pitcher is out and waiting for 5 o’clock!
Hehe! Oriana, thanks, and it’s 5:00 somewhere!
I also love pomegranate juice for their antioxidants and other health bennies—when I can also have it with alcohol? Well, that’s just the bee’s knees. I’m SURE that it’s practically health food. Er, drink.
Haha. Thanks Michelle!

Hi Elaine,
I’m in So Cal with strict Pandemic rules. No where to go, nothing to do. My Dad has a Pomegranate and a lime tree busting with fruit. With no where to do and nothing to do I made my own pomegranate juice and squeezed my own lime juice and made my own lime simple syrup. Your recipe is the best. So fresh and delicious.
THANK YOU!!
How fun!I’ve never seen a pomegranate tree. When I lived in California – (Sacramento) We had an orange tree and our neighbors had a grapefruit tree. I’m so glad you enjoyed it. Thank YOU for taking the time to comment and rate the recipe. I so appreciate it Fran. 🙂
