Take out the butter and egg at least a half hour before starting the recipe.
Place dates in medium sized bowl, add butter and pour in boiling water and coffee and let it sit for 15 minutes - to soften and cool.
2 cups dates, 1/2 cup boiled water, 1/4 cup butter, 1/2 cup hot decaf coffee
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F and grease a bread pan.
In a small bowl, assemble flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda and set aside.
2/3 cup brown sugar, 1 3/4 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
In another small bowl add the egg, vanilla and brown sugar and whisk until incorporated.
1 egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla
Pour the egg mixture over the date mixture and add the dry ingredients. Stir until just incorporated. Do not overmix.
Fold in the walnuts, again being careful not to overmix.
3/4 cup chopped walnuts
Pour into prepared loaf pan and bake for 45 - 50 minutes. Check doneness at 45 minutes with either a cake tester or toothpick. If there are a few crumbs or if it's clean, that means it's done.
Let cool for at least 10 minutes before removing from pan and transferring the bread to cool on a wire rack.
Slice, eat, and enjoy.
