Helpful tips
  • I use homemade orange infused vodka but if you don't have the inclination to make your own infused vodka, just use store bought - though the orange flavor won't taste as good as a homemade infusion. I find that store bought flavored vodka's taste 'fake'.
  • Whenever you use either the juice of freshly squeezed fruit or a piece of fresh fruit as garnish in your cocktail, it's important to wash the fruit well. You don't want to be ingesting pesticides.
  • There are a few ways to clean your fruit (and vegetables). One way is to use a fruit/vegetable cloth. It is rough on one side and smooth on the other. Here's how to use it: Wet the cloth with cold water, take the fruit in your hand and scrub the skin thoroughly with the rough side. Rinse and dry the fruit. If you want to shine your fruit, (like apples) after you dry the fruit, rub it with the smooth side.
  • You can also wash the fruit by hand: squirt some unscented, natural soap in your hand and rub the fruit between your palms. Take a vegetable brush and scrub the skin, rinse thoroughly and dry.
  • I usually use the orange liqueur Cointreau in my cocktails but since there is a good amount of orange juice in this cocktail, I chose to use triple sec which is much more budget friendly.
  • I usually use orange juice with pulp, but if you prefer your juice without pulp, go for it.
  • Since orange juice is sweet, there is no need to add simple syrup. But, if you love really sweet drinks, add 1/4 ounce before shaking the cocktail shaker.
  • You can garnish this martini with orange wheels like I do or with an orange wedge, which you will squeeze into the cocktail and drop the fruit in the glass.
  • You can also garnish the rim of the glass with orange sugar, but I'm not a fan and think it makes it too sweet. Here's how to garnish with sugar: sprinkle some orange sugar onto a small dish. Dip your finger in simple syrup, rub the rim of the glasses and dip the rim into the sugar. Make sure to cover the entire rim. Shake off any excess and pour the cocktail into the glasses.
