I do like this watermelon infused vodka, but I really love cherry vodka. That’s my favorite.

One of my most popular cocktails is the cherry vodka sour. It’s so good. But during the summer months, everyone wants me to make them a watermelon cosmo.

Helpful tips

  • Use a good mid level vodka like Ketel One because you will usually make a cocktail that is mostly vodka so you need good quality since you’ll taste it.
  • My recipes for the all my infused alcohol is sugar free. And fruit has a lot of sugar in it so it will be sweetened naturally.

How to make this infused vodka

Step one

Gather the ingredients – watermelon, vodka and a jar.

Step two

Get a 32 ounce ball jar and add watermelon into it, minus the seeds. Fill it all the way to the top.

Step three

Pour the vodka into the ball jar to meet up with the watermelon. It took about 2 cups of vodka to cover the fruit.

Step four

Screw the cap on the ball jar and place it into the refrigerator. Let it sit for a week. Take it out once a day to shake it.

You can taste it after a four days to see if the infused vodka is done but I find it takes a full week to be perfect.

As you can see, the watermelon shrinks.

Warning

Here is my warning to you. Do NOT eat the watermelon. If you do, you will find a spongy mess in your mouth. Best to just throw it away.

  1. This looks like something I should put together right now so I can enjoy it next weekend! Thanks for the tip on NOT eating the watermelon cause I surely would have dove right in.

  2. You’re a clever lady! And a funny one… that warning made me LOL. I too, love vodka so will get some soaking!

  3. This looks like a noble use of watermelon! And the post is timely, given summer’s proximity. Cheers, wodka lovers!

  4. I’m sure that watermelon could be used for something! But what a great way to add flavor to the vodka!

  5. I do a similar thing with cherries, sugar and vodka – and you actually do eat the cherries! Can’t wait to see what you do with your watermelon vodka!

    1. That sounds awesome Lisa! I love cherries, my absolutely favorite fruit! Yesterday I made some bourbon soaked cherries!

  6. We do this sooo much in the summers!! Have you tried vodka steeped pineapples?? Just as awesome!

  7. That looks so refreshing and perfect for summer. Plus, it has fruit in it, so it must be healthy right?!

  8. Ohhhh….I love infused vodkas and I love watermelon – this is the spirit for me! I bet this is so good that it would make a nice sipper on the rocks. But that cosmo looks to die for as well 😉

  9. I was thinking of letting the watermelon sit in Vodka for several weeks, but I don’t know if the melon will get too mushy and fall apart. I was also thinking of squishing the vodka out of the melon to get the most vodka possible. What are your thoughts or experience on those two ideas?

    1. Rachel, it would definitely get too mushy if you keep it in the vodka for several weeks. I understand the urge, but there is only so much flavor that will come out of the fruit. You could squish it between your fingers but make sure to do it over some cheese cloth so you don’t get the fruit in the vodka as it may spoil over time. I hope this helps.

  10. How long do you think the vodka will keep without spoiling after the watermelon is removed? If not drink straight away ????

    1. I still have some I made last year. Still good. I’m at 15 months. Just as long as there isn’t any watermelon chunks in the vodka, you’re good.

  11. Thanks for the recipe. I have been playing around with this all summer. I currently have a blueberry and raspberry infusion in vodka, cherries in bourbon and tequila and today I do a pear in vodka jar. I have been using these to liven up my fruit salads. I am actually thinking of a jalapeño tequila. Now I will have to try it with watermelon. Do the jars have to be refrigerated. I keep them there but am running out of space with this new obsession

    1. They don’t have to be refrigerated and will last in your bar cabinet after it has been infused. They only time I refrigerate when I’m infusing is when it’s super hot out 80 + degrees Fahrenheit. I love making infusions and always look forward to my next one. I’m intrigued about livening up your fruit salads – what are you doing? I’d love to know. I have to say, of all the infusions I’ve done, Strawberry is my favorite. Have you tried that yet? And I have a jalapeño tequila on the site. Love it! Thanks for commenting, Bob. I appreciate it.

  12. I put leftover vodka ridden watermelon in blender with non-infused watermelon, a splash of soda and a sprig of mint …. it was wonderful and no waste.
