Pineapple Margarita

This classic margarita is given an extra tropical twist with the addition of pineapple juice. You can also change it up by using jalapeño-infused tequila or chile simple syrup to make a spicy pineapple margarita! Either way, it’s a margarita cocktail you’ll want to keep in your rotation.

I heart margaritas

As anyone who knows me understands, I LOVE margaritas. All margaritas. Although, as I’ve stated before, I generally prefer plain margaritas over the fruity kind. But the flavor of this pineapple margarita delivers all the things I love about this Cinco de Mayo drink, and I think you’ll love it too.

Here are other margaritas I have on this site: Cadillac (my all-time favorite), cucumber, raspberry, coconut, peach, Italian, avocado, blood orange, sangria, blue, pomegranate, cherry, cranberry, lemon, mango, jalapeño, melon, and mistletoe.

What is a pineapple margarita?

Margaritas have the base of tequila, orange liqueur, and sweet and sour – whether it’s a store-bought mix or you make it yourself, as I do. Most margaritas can be made either frozen or on the rocks. This pineapple margarita is no different. I have made this margarita both ways, and I can’t really say which I prefer.

This is a re-do of a much-loved recipe so I will include both variations in the recipe card below. The frozen version will be in the notes section.

The difference between the two is that in the rocks version, you use pineapple juice, but in the frozen version, you use fresh chunks of pineapple.

Tips
  • Even though you use pineapple juice, I like to lime to this margarita to give it a nice zing.
  • Before juicing the lime, make sure you wash it. Here’s how – squirt some unscented, natural soap onto your hand and rub the lime between your palms. Then take a vegetable brush and scrub the skin. And lastly, run the lime under cold water to rinse all the soap off.
  • The other way to wash a lime is my preferred way: This vegetable and fruit cloth has a rough side and a smooth side. The rough side helps scrub the skin, and the smooth side shines the fruit. Run cold water on the fruit and take the rough side of the cloth and rub the skin of the citrus. Rinse thoroughly before juicing.
  • I like to use the orange liqueur Cointreau in my margaritas, but a more budget-friendly alternative is triple sec.
  • I’m using a blanco tequila, but you can use tequila reposado or añejo instead.
  • Chile simple syrup is my new favorite as it adds just the right spice to cocktails. But if you prefer, just use plain simple syrup – or if you like spice but don’t have chile simple syrup, you can always use some homemade jalapeño tequila.
  • I do love a salted rim. Here is my favorite lime salt.
  • Here’s how to salt the rim of the glass: wet your finger with either simple syrup or lime juice and rub it around the rim. Either sprinkle some flake salt on a plate or open the lime salt tin. Dip the rims of the glass in the salt, making sure to coat the rim thoroughly. With the glass upside down, shake off any loose salt before placing the glass right side up.
  • Want to make a pitcher of this margarita? Just use the slider in the recipe card to adjust how many servings you want.
  • I like to cut fresh pineapple wedges as a garnish, but you can either use pre-cut pineapple chunks, lime slices, or lime wedges as garnish.

Ingredients you’ll need for this recipe

  • Tequila
  • Cointreau or triple sec
  • Pineapple juice
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup

Do I need to use Patron Silver tequila? What alternatives are there?

I love Patron, which is a good quality tequila, but it does come with a hefty price. So, no, you can replace Patron with your favorite brand. Some great alternative brands that won’t empty your wallet are Epsolòn, and Lunazul.

If you want to read more about tequila, I have a guide here.

How to make a pineapple margarita

Pre-step

Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice. Get a measuring glass and glassware. Cut a few pineapple wedges, make sure to cut a small slit in them so you can place them on the rim. You can also use pre-cut chunks of pineapple for the garnish or lime wedges. Set them aside.

After measuring out the ingredients, pour them into the cocktail shaker.

Step one

If you’re going to salt the rims of the glass, do so now. Here’s how: wet your finger with either simple syrup or lime juice and rub it around the rim. Either sprinkle some flake salt on a plate or open the lime salt tin. Dip the rims of the glass in the salt, making sure to coat the rim thoroughly. With the glass upside down, shake off any loose salt before placing the glass right side up.

Step two

Gather the ingredients – tequila, orange liqueur, pineapple juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. (A)

Step three

Measure 4 ounces of tequila. (B)

Step four

Measure 1 ounce of orange liqueur. (C)

Step five

Measure 6 ounces of pineapple juice. (D)

Step six

Measure 1 ounce of lime juice. (E)

Step seven

Measure 3/4 ounce of chile simple syrup. (F)

Lime juice and chili simple syrup measured out

Step eight

Place the lid on the cocktail shaker and shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Place a few fresh ice cubes in each glass. I’m partial to these big cubes.

Step nine

Strain, divide, and pour the liquid between the two glasses. Be careful not to pour over the salted rim, as you don’t want a salty margarita. Place a pineapple wedge on each glass rim.

Don’t these pineapple margaritas look delicious? Look at the red chile bits at the bottom of the glass! This is the perfect summertime drink! Can’t you see yourself drinking it at the side of a pool or on your shady patio?
