Melon Ball Cocktail

Transport back to the 80’s when you mix and enjoy this melon ball cocktail. It’s pretty, delicious and only has three ingredients!

Looking for a cocktail to serve on St. Patrick’s Day? This one fits the bill and has such a delicious flavor that you’ll smile as you do the Irish jig. Just don’t spill any as every drop is precious.

If you like a sweet cocktail and honeydew melon, you will really enjoy this recipe. And melon ball is as pretty as it is delicious, which makes it a perfect choice to serve before dinner at your next party.

Disco balls and dancing peeps

I’m not exactly certain when this melon ball cocktail was first made. What I do remember is I saw a lot of these drinks in the 80s.

I’d go to a dance club and there this green drink would be, clutched in sweaty people’s hands as they swigged them down to cool themselves off after they moonwalked, did the robot or pretended to be John Travolta with their pointer finger stretched toward the multi-faceted disco ball.

I know this was my sister in law’s cocktail of choice when she went clubbing with Christopher!

Helpful tips

  • You can either serve this cocktail on the rocks or straight up in a martini glass, which is what I prefer.
  • I use Midori for this cocktail, but you can use any melon-flavored alcohol.
  • Although this recipe calls for Grey Goose vodka, we’re mixing it with fruit juice (in this case, orange juice) and liqueur, which means you can’t taste the vodka as well, so you don’t need a premium brand.
  • When I garnish my cocktails with fruit, I usually use a martini pick to keep it off the bottom of the glass. This allows you and your guests to nibble on the fruit without waiting for the drink to be fully imbibed or having to fish it out with your fingers. (Christopher hoped no one was looking.)
  • If you love honeydew, buy the whole melon to cut up the fruit garnish. Otherwise, I recommend buying a pre-cut container of fruit that comes with melon chunks.

How to make a melon ball cocktail

Pre-step

Get your cocktail shaker and fill it halfway with ice. Also get your measuring glass, martini glasses and two martini picks.

Spear two pieces of melon on each martini pick and set aside.

After measuring out the ingredients, pour into the shaker.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – vodka, melon liqueur and orange juice.

Measure out 4 ounces of melon liqueur.

Step three

Measure out 2 ounces of vodka.

Step four

Measure out 4 ounces of orange juice.

Step six

Cap the shaker and shake for 15 seconds. Strain and divide the liquid between the two glasses.

Place the melon garnish into each glass.

Ingredients

  • 4 ounces Midori
  • 2 ounce vodka
  • 4 ounces orange juice

  • Fill cocktail shaker half way with ice

  1. I had to give this five stars because I could taste it reading the recipe! I’ll definitely be giving it a go. I love cocktails. A negroni is my favourite but they’re strong so not too many of those! This is such a beautiful colour too.
