Melon Margarita Cocktail

This melon margarita cocktail recipe is so delicious. And, I used Powell and Mahoney’s classic margarita mix, which makes it super fast to mix the melon margaritas and get them into your guests waiting mouths!

I almost always use homemade sweet and sour in my cocktails. I particularly like my homemade version because I find the majority of pre-made sweet and sour mixes too sweet.

This is the only pre-made mix I will use. It’s from Powell & Mahoney. And if I’m serving a bunch of margaritas and want to enjoy myself, I will purchase theirs. I like that they use only natural ingredients and make their mixers in small batches.

Helpful tips

  • Choose a good quality blanco tequila or reposado tequila for a smoother taste. The tequila’s quality can significantly affect your margarita’s overall taste.
  • The key to a great margarita is balancing the sweetness of the melon and liqueur with the sourness of lime juice. Adjust the amounts to taste, ensuring neither flavor overpowers the other.
  • Make your own if you can’t find Powel and Mahoney’s classic margarita mixer. Here’s my philosophy – most sweet and sour mixes for margaritas are too sweet. I go by this ratio – 1 part simple syrup (or agave nectar) to 2 parts fresh lime juice.
  • Using a high-quality orange liqueur like Triple Sec or Cointreau adds depth and complements the melon’s sweetness.
  • I did not salt the rims of the glass for this presentation. But it is a good option with melon liqueur, which tends to be sweet. To apply, run a lime wedge around the rim of the glass and then dip it into a plate of salt.
  • You can garnish your margarita with a small melon ball or a lime wedge for a visual and flavorful accent. It adds to the overall presentation and gives a hint of the flavors within.
  • I prefer this cocktail on the rocks but you can certainly use a blender for a slushie-like texture. If you prefer it on the rocks, shake the ingredients with ice in a shaker and then strain into your prepared glass.
  • Margaritas are best enjoyed fresh. Once you’ve mixed your drink, serve it immediately to enjoy its full flavor and cold temperature.

How to make a melon margarita

Pre-step

Get a cocktail shaker and fill it halfway with ice. Also get a measuring glass, and margarita glasses.

Slice two thin lime wheels from a lime and cut a small slit in them.

After measuring out the ingredients, pour them into the cocktail shaker.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – Powell & Mahoney classic margarita mixer, tequila, and Midori melon liqueur!

Okay. Now, let’s see what I did with these delicious margaritas!

I invited my sister, Robyn and our family friend Lisa over for appetizers, melon margaritas and pulled pork sandwiches because everything, and not just holidays, are #bettertogether!

A male pouring the margaritas in the glasses so everyone can party. Lots of apps on the table

That’s Christopher pouring the yummy melon margarita in Robyn’s glass. Notice her iron grip on the base of her glass? She knows that if I wasn’t behind the camera, I’d be running over there and snatching it out of her hand.

I hope you enjoyed this melon margarita recipe.

  1. I’m with you, Elaine! Most mixers are way too sweet! In fact, my husband usually “cuts” my margarita mixer with club soda for a little fizz and less sugar. I’m definitely going to look for Powell and Mahoney the next time I’m at the liquor store.

  2. Margaritas are such a fun drink. The melon is a great twist! Margaritas, good friends and laughter is the recipe for fun.
