Irish Flag Shot | Pretty and Delicious

This Irish flag shot, featuring creme de menthe, is a favorite for those who enjoy its flavor. The shot is layered, creating a visually appealing drink that gains popularity around Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17. However, its appeal isn’t limited to just that day. It’s a versatile choice that can be enjoyed throughout the year for special occasions or casual gatherings. One of the things I love about this shot is that the combination of the ingredients lessens the cloying quality that green crème de menthe has.

People who love mint, LOVE this layered shot. They also go crazy over the grasshopper cocktail and the After Eight shot.

As you probably guessed already, this shot was named after the color combinations of the flag of Ireland, and that’s why it’s important to use green crème de menthe and not the white version.

Helpful tips

  • If you are going to layer any shot, either use a cocktail spoon or regular iced coffee teaspoon – for the thin, tall shot glass, I have to use the iced coffee teaspoon because the cocktail spoon is too wide to fit in the glass.
  • Always place the spoon bowl side up in the glass, against the side.
  • Using a pourer controls the pour, which is critical to layering any shot. The slower you pour the liqueur, the better. But if you do use a pourer, know that you will have to eyeball your quantities because, in that case, they’re coming straight out of the bottle, unmeasured.
  • As with all layered shots, you need to place the heaviest liquor on the bottom and work up to the lightest. So, the order of the layers matters.
  • If Baileys is out of budget, you can use any Irish cream liqueur.
  • Some people keep their Irish cream in the refrigerator, but I never have, and it doesn’t spoil.

How to make the Irish flag shot

Pre-step

Get a cocktail spoon, pourer and shot glasses.

This recipe is for one layered shot. If you are making more shots, just multiply the ingredients by how many shots you are making.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – green crème de menthe, Baileys Irish cream and premium orange liqueur — Grand Marnier.

Step two

Pour green creme de menthe 1/3 of the way up the glass.

Step three

Place the spoon bowl side up in and against the side of the glass and slowly pour a half ounce of Baileys Irish cream over the bowl and into the glass (another 1/3 of the way up the glass.)

Step four

Place the spoon in the glass again and pour the Grand Marnier slowly over the back of a bar spoon.

I’ve said this before, but when I layer Grand Marnier as I do with layered shots like this B52 shot, I can’t get the Grand Marnier to separate fully without some cloudiness.  But you know what? That’s okay because you can still see the layers. And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect.

This pretty shot is not only colorful but it is delicious! It represents the Irish flag and I believe even leprechauns will like it!

Ingredients

  • .50 ounce green Creme de Menthe
  • .50 ounce Baileys Irish Cream
  • .50 ounce Grand Marnier

Instructions

  • Fill your shot glass 1/3 with Creme de Menthe
  • Use your spoon and turn the bowl up, slowly pour Baileys Irish cream over the bowl so it layers. Fill it so it is 2/3 full
  • Use your spoon again and slowly pour Grand Marnier until it reaches close to the top of the shot glass
  • Take the shot glass and down the contents
  • Smile
  • Enjoy

  9. Oh yum, looks so delicious! I actually love creme de menthe haha, I am a serial mint fan haha. This one reminds me a bit of a jellyfish shot, where you can put in a few drops of raspberry syrup or cordial to pull some of the thicker layers down into the clear bottom layer. So fun!
