What could be better than a classic grilled cheese sandwich? A camembert grilled cheese sandwich, of course! Combining camembert cheese with the crunchy texture of toasted bread and juicy cherry slices, this decadent dish is sure to tantalize your taste buds in all the best ways.

I’m so in love with these sandwiches. I wait all year for cherry season to come around so I can make this sandwich. It makes for a quick lunch treat, especially if you have a few unexpected guests to impress.

You could make it with frozen cherries but it’s not the same. Nothing beats fresh cherries nestled snugly between two cheese-slathered bread slices.  But, if the cherry season is over, it will do in a pinch.

Tips
  • I like to use wheat artisan bread but use what you prefer whether it be white bread, sourdough bread or brioche rolls.
  • I find it takes 2-3 minutes on each side of the bread for it to toast to a nice golden brown.
  • Looking for the perfect soup to serve with this grilled cheese sandwich? Try a nice tomato soup as it pairs perfectly.
  • If you don’t have cherries or you don’t like the fruit, you can add a dollop of caramelized onions, tomato slices, or whole cranberry sauce to the camembert.
  • I slather butter on the outer sides of each slice of bread but you can add olive oil to the grill pan each time you flip the bread. It’s just as yummy.

How to make a camembert grilled cheese sandwich

Pre-step

Get a sauté pan or griddle. I’m partial to a large cast iron skillet.

Step one

Gather the ingredients – Either fresh pitted cherries or cherry sauce, camembert cheese, and a loaf of good artisan bread.

Step two

Heat the sauté pan on medium heat.

Step three

Slice four pieces of bread off the loaf of bread and spread hunks of camembert cheese on the insides of all four slices.

Step four

Slather butter on the outsides of two slices and place them in the sauté pan.

Step five

Dollop some cherry sauce on cheesed up bread in the pan and place the other cheese-covered bread on top.

Most noteworthy, I don’t butter those second top pieces until the bottom slices of bread toast up.

Step six

I help the grilling process even more by using a bacon press. I place it on top of the bread. The weight of the press will help the bread get to a golden brown quicker.

If you don’t have one, just press down on the top slices a few times with a spatula.

Step seven

Once the bottom slices of bread are perfectly grilled it’s time to butter the top pieces of bread and flip the sandwiches.

Replace the bacon press on the sandwich or you can push down a few times with the spatula and wait for that side of the grilled cheese sandwich to toast up as a result.

Cut the sandwiches and plate them.
